Do liver detox herbs work to cure hangovers?

It is that time year where we may over indulge at those Christmas parties and catch-ups. How many of you use liver herbs to cure your hangover? Do you think they work?

So do they work to cure hangovers? Unfortunately they are not a quick fix. They simply help your liver work more efficiently. In that sense they will help you detox out the toxins and alcohol more quickly. Taken prior to going out, they will help process things more quickly.

At this time of year herbs that help to detox your liver are a must to help give you more energy, improve digestion and help to offset the over indulgences of the season.

Over the next few days I will be discussing my favourite liver herbs as they all work differently.

Just a few notes:
* If you are on any kind of medication (like the contraceptive pill or heart medications), liver herbs will reduce the drugs effectiveness as they will be detoxed out of the body quicker. As a Naturopath I take into account any drug-herb interactions.

* Liver herbs will not reduce your blood alcohol levels - best way to not have a hangover, don’t drink too much!

Probiotics - your friends for the Christmas holidays

The beneficial properties of probiotics are well documented. For the hectic Christmas period these friendly little guys must be your friends. I highly suggest you either take a supplement or foods like kefir, sauerkraut or kombucha. Probiotics will help keep you digesting well and support your immune system - both take a hit at this time of year.

2 Toxic foods that sabotage your mood and increase stress!

It is true, you are what you eat. And this can’t be more true in relation to your mood and emotional well-being. Just as foods can uplift your mood, they can also quickly bring it down. Here are the top three foods that can trigger a poor mood and increase stress.

1. SUGAR - especially fructose. Eating foods high in sugar can lead to blood sugar fluctuations, which can trigger mood swings. Sugar also suppresses activity of BDNF, which promotes the health of your brain neurons. BDNF levels are critically low in both depression and schizophrenia. Sugar consumption also triggers a cascade of chemical reactions in your body that promote chronic inflammation. In the long term, inflammation disrupts the normal functioning of your immune system, which is linked to a greater risk of depression. Hence refined sugar intake could exert a toxic effect on your mood and mental health.

2. ARTIFICIAL FOOD INGREDIENTS: the artificial sweetener aspartame in particular, can wreak havoc with your brain function. Both depression and panic attacks are known potential side effects of aspartame consumption. Other additives, such as artificial colours, flavours, enhancers etc are also known to impact mood. On a basic level, artificial additives makes the liver work harder to cleanse them out of your body. This extra energy processing these artificial chemicals adds another layer of stress for your body to deal with.

Eliminating both these things will vastly improve how you manage your stress and also will boost your mood.

As a Naturopath I treat you holistically - meaning I treat you as a whole person not just your symptoms. I have 2 clinics, one at Marquee Health Clinic (Sydney CBD), Forestville (Northern Beaches) and I also offer consultations Australia wide via SKYPE. Please message me for more information on how I can help you.

Chronic Stress - One of the biggest threats to our health.

More and more I see clients that are living constantly under a veil of stress. Stress is like a layer cake made up of many many layers. Every time we have a new stress it is added to the cake. Layers include the normal stress of work, family, hectic life, emotional stress, hormonal imbalances and also things like poor eating habits, too much caffeine and dehydration. If you add major stresses like divorce, marriage, death of loved ones or even moving house your layer cake can easily topple over. So what happens if you do not reduce those layers and manage your stress? Your body starts to breakdown and health issues start.

So what are some of the health problems?

Digestive problems - IBS, bloating, leaky gut, indigestion, reflux etc
Hormonal problems - infertility, period pain, PCOS etc
Fatigue & chronic fatigue
Skin problems - eczema, psoriasis
Headaches
Insomnia
High blood pressure, palpitations
Weight gain - especially around the middle
Inflammation

And the list goes on. If chronic stress isn’t addressed it may even lead to major health conditions like heart disease and even cancer.

So what can we do to relieve or at least manage stress? Over the next few posts I’ll give you some tips to help you keep healthy.
